Skynet

The word ought to make your stomach drop if it applies to the real world.

From Borepatch comes this:

Al Fin has a very interesting post about autonomous, armed micro drone assassins:

The size of these tiny killer-drones is quickly shrinking, so that it will not be long before lethal drone packages can be delivered under stealth in the form of birds, bats, or insects -- right in the lap of an enemy base or command and control centre.

It has become clear to militaries that remote controlled drones are subject to being hacked, hijacked, or having their communications jammed. Consequently, there is a rush to develop semi-autonomous or fully-autonomous drones capable of carrying out a mission after communications is lost.
This is, of course, a horrifyingly Bad Idea.  After all, what could possibly go wrong?  I have predictions:

Please go read this plus the link. Borepatch has it down pat, with a few well thought out scenarios. It's just gonna make you angry. Oh, that was a warning.

  1. The world isn't going to end with a bang. It's going to end with stupidity versus knowledge and even a teenager has the knowledge to hack anything and create disaster, so there's nothing to hold back a crackpot with a wee bit of knowledge.

But when the true battle is cancer, everything else disappears into the "What? Me worry?" MAD Magazine category.
