Grandpa's Journal

Sunday July 2, 1911
To S.S. and preaching. Went to the bridge to McBayes.

Monday July 3, 1911
Got ready for the 4th.

Tuesday July 4, 1911
Spent day in Hillman.

Wednesday July 5, 1911
Worked around house. Went to Crooked River in evening.

Thursday July 6, 1911
Hauled water. Went to Slough's place. Hauled rock built cellar evening.

Friday July 7, 1911
Worked on cellar all day.

Saturday July 8, 1911
To Redmond in P.M. bought horse and mule colt.

  1. I try to imagine all the other stuff that he was doing besides those brief journal entries. He obviously just took it in stride, but life back then was a lot more back breaking. Reminds me of my paternal Grandfather that retired from carpentry at the age of 73 because holding a sheet of drywall against the ceiling joists with a nail perched between index finger and thumb, hammer in the right hand got to be a bit of a struggle.
